what is an area plan?
An area plan establishes a clear statement of a community’s desires for the future. It is a long range vision that addresses general issues shared by the entire planning area. The area plan is not about property acquisition; it is a framework to evaluate future initiatives as they arise.
Different kinds of plans view the city in varying levels of detail. A comprehensive plan deals with an entire city. FOCUS is an example of a comprehensive plan.
An area plan takes the broad recommendations of a comprehensive plan and promotes their application in a general area.
A neighborhood plan deals with the issues of a specific, localized neighborhood. The three maps to the right illustrate the scope of comprehensive, area, and neighborhood plans.
